Primary school

Primary education consists of nine years of schooling, which are divided into four learning cycles. The first cycle includes one year of early education, which is optional, and two years of pre-school education, which is mandatory. 

The second, third and fourth cycles constitute the former primary education. Each learning cycle lasts in principle two years (Article 1 of the Law of 6 February 2009 - organisation of basic education).

Aims

Early education aims at the overall development of the child and more particularly at his or her language development. 

By living and learning with others, the child who attends the early learning cycle will have access to basic learning by means of an educative approach that will stimulate his or her intellectual curiosity and develop his or her social, cognitive and emotional behaviour. 

For children, familiarisation with the Luxembourg language is one of the priorities of the early learning cycle. The emphasis is on a playful approach to the language in real communication situations. Early education is an introduction to play, especially educational and communicative play, and language training through practice (discovery of picture books, storytelling, singing, etc.).

Modalities

General 

Early education is provided as an optional offer. As early education is part of public education, it is free. 

Admission age 

Early education is reserved for children who have reached the age of 3 before 1 September of the coming school year. 

Staff 

The early education team consists of a teacher and an educator for each class. 

Transport 

Transport is to be provided or organised by the parents.
