Kopstal, a Fairtrade commune

Our commune was awarded the "Commune Fairtrade" label in 2022 and has successfully renewed this certification for 2024 and 2025. This label rewards our commitment to fair trade and solidarity. By choosing Fairtrade products, we contribute directly to improving the living and working conditions of producers and workers in developing countries.

A positive national trend

This positive development is part of a growing national trend towards fairer trade. The NGO Fairtrade Luxembourg announced in July 2024 that Luxembourgers' spending on Fairtrade products had increased by 19 euros per person in 2023, reaching an average of 79 euros per person. These figures bear witness to people's growing awareness of the importance of fair and sustainable consumption.

Why support fair trade?

Fair trade is based on a philosophy of social and economic justice. Its aim is to reduce global inequalities, guarantee fair pay for producers and promote sustainable production. By choosing products bearing the Fairtrade label, we are contributing to a fairer world based on solidarity.

Certification requirements

In order to obtain this certification, we met five important criteria:

  • Fairtrade Local Action Group: A dedicated group steers and coordinates Fairtrade activities in our commune. It also ensures that new local players join the initiative. The group currently has 12 members from the local community, clubs and residents.
  • Fairtrade policy within the local authority: The local council has adopted a "Fairtrade Gemeng" resolution and is committed to consuming Fairtrade-labelled products. All municipal employees are informed and made aware of Fairtrade issues.
  • Awareness-raising and visibility in local media: Every year, we organise at least one public awareness-raising event and publish several articles on Fairtrade in our local media. This year, for example, we organised an Easter egg hunt followed by an Easter brunch featuring Fairtrade products.
  • Development education and involvement of local players: Our school, the Maison Relais and other local structures are actively involved. Educational activities such as workshops at school are organised in collaboration with the NGO Fairtrade Luxembourg to raise awareness among the younger generation.
  • Offer of Fairtrade products in the commune: Local shops, including restaurants and cafés, are encouraged to offer Fairtrade products.

The future of fair trade

As a local authority, we will continue our commitment to fair trade:

  • By purchasing Fair Trade products,
  • By informing and raising public awareness of Fair Trade principles,
  • By working with local shops and associations to encourage them to offer Fair Trade products.
