Appointment and composition of the college of aldermen

The aldermen are elected by the municipal council for a period of 6 years. As with the members of the municipal council, the number of aldermen depends on the number of inhabitants in the commune.

The college of mayor and aldermen of the commune of Kopstal is composed of :

  • Thierry Schuman (CSV) - mayor
  • Josy Popov (DP) - 1st alderman
  • Raoul Weicker (CSV) - 2nd alderman

The college of aldermen meets under the chairmanship of the mayor, on the days and at the times laid down in the municipal regulations, and as often as necessary to deal with urgent matters. Meetings of the college of aldermen are not open to the public.

Functions of the college of the aldermen

The powers of the council of the aldermen, provided for by law, are as follows:

  • managing day-to-day problems 
  • enforcing laws, decrees, ordinances, regulations and government orders
  • publishing and executing the resolutions of the municipal council
  • administering communal buildings and assets
  • managing revenues, authorising expenditure and overseeing the commune's cash and accounting systems
  • managing communal works
  • issuing building and subdivision permits
  • supervising the staff of the communal administration
  • organising the fire service
  • conservation of communal archives
  • taking legal action on behalf of the commune.

The college of aldermen is also responsible for keeping civil registers. To this end, it appoints a civil registrar who may be either the mayor or one of the aldermen.
