Terms and conditions
Citizens of a Member State of the European Union and citizens of an assimilated country (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and the Swiss Confederation) residing in Luxembourg and intending to stay there for more than three months, must contact, within three months of their arrival, the Population Office in order apply for "certificate of registration".
Family members of an EU citizen who themselves are third-country citizens, must apply for a "residence card for the family member of a Union citizen".
Required documents
- a valid identity document
Additional documents in the following cases:
for salaried workers:
- the original of the employment contract (dated and signed by both parties) or a promise of employment (dated and signed) issued by the future employer.
for self-employed workers, one of these documents:
- a certified copy of the authorisation to establish a business,
- a certified copy of the letter from the Ministère des Classes Moyennes certifying that an establishment permit is not required for the activity carried out,
- a certified copy of the licence to practice (doctor, physiotherapist, etc.),
- registration at the Bar (lawyers, etc.),
- a service provision contract.
for students:
- enrolment in a public or private educational establishment approved in Luxembourg in order to follow, on a principal basis, studies or vocational training;
for non-active persons:
- proof of sufficient resources from an old-age pension or annuity
- health insurance valid in the Grand Duchy
for family members who are themselves EU citizens
- a copy of the EU Citizen's (or citizen of an assimilated country) registration certificate,
- an extract from the marriage certificate or the certificate of registered partnership,
- in the case of a descendant: a certified copy of the birth certificate,
- in the case of an ascendant: declaration of care to be made (please contact the Population Office herefor)
Required document format
Original or certified copy less than 6 months old. Photos of documents are not accepted. All documents in a language other than German, French or English must be translated by a sworn interpreter.
