Terms and conditions

Family members of Union citizens (or citizens of an assimilated country) who are third-country citizens must apply for a "residence card for the family member of a Union citizen".

Family members include the spouse, registered partner, direct descendants of the same citizen, as well as direct descendants of the spouse (or partner) who are under 21 years of age or dependent, dependent direct ascendants of the spouse (or partner). The only exception: for students, only the spouse, registered partner and children are considered family members.

Required documents

  • the original valid passport must be presented (including the visa if one is required for entry into the country),
  • the letter from the Immigration Department authorising you to enter Luxembourg (for countries requiring a visa),
  • the registration certificate of the EU citizen joining (or the citizen of one of the assimilated countries joining),
  • an extract from the marriage certificate or registered partnership certificate,
  • in the case of a descendant: a certified copy of the birth certificate,
  • in the case of an ascendant: declaration of care to be made (please contact the Population Office herefor) 

Required document format  

Original or certified copy less than 6 months old. Photos of documents are not accepted. All documents in a language other than German, French or English must be translated by a sworn interpreter.
